Navigation & Communication

The underwater domain is becoming increasingly remote and autonomous. Over-the-horizon operations, unattended underwater sensors, interoperable squads or even swarms of autonomous systems, increased lethality through use of off-board systems are all terms we are now familiar with. To enable true UUV autonomy over prolonged missions, you are going to need to do two things well: navigate and communicate.

Where am I and where is my robot?

Very quickly when operating underwater your operations are GNSS denied. That’s where we can help you. Sonardyne’s hybrid acoustic-inertial navigators combine state-of-the-art inertial navigation systems, Doppler and depth sensors to provide best-in-class underwater navigation. As well as offering a level of superior performance the systems have been calibrated in the factory meaning they can be rapidly mobilized in the field. Why is this important? Position certainty translates to improved situational awareness and lethality.

Let’s work together

To bring ambitious autonomy plans into fruition, a mindset change is needed to understand command control communication infrastructure and capabilities. It’s not a simple task. Fortunately, you can count on our technology partner Sonardyne. A leader in the development of underwater communications instrumentation, delivering both long range, short bandwidth acoustic solutions or shorter range, larger bandwidth optical modems. Sonardyne is now working to solve interoperability, by developing alongside Dstl an open standard for secure, reliable communications (Phorcys).
